Smith Micro completes acquisition of e frontier's graphics & animation business
By gmon2 on 12/15/2007
e frontier has been acquired by Smith Micro.  Smith Micro sells and distributes software such as Aquazone Screen Saver, StuffIt Deluxe, and graphics programs like Morpheus Photo Morpher.  I've seen their products in stores like CompUSA.  This has caught me by surprise because the graphics programs sold by e frontier seem way more sophisticated than the programs sold by Smith Micro.  If any company was to acquire another company, I would think it would have been the other way around.  From what I understand, Smith Micro has a better distribution network than e frontier -- in other words, we can expect to see products like Poser 7, Anime Studio, Manga Studio, and Motion Artist 4 in more retail stores and that is a good thing for all.

Carrara 6
By gmon2 on 9/26/2007
Well, I took advantage of Daz Production's current sale and purchased Carrara 6.  I still haven't scratched the surface of Daz Studio so I'm not sure it was a wise purchase for me.  I sure have spent a lot of money on this new hobby and I haven't really produced anything yet.  I have too many interests and not enough time!  Carrara 6 can load and use Daz Studio content and seems to basically combine the features of Hexagon 2 (3D Modelling), Bryce (Landscape), and Poser/Daz Studio into one program.

Starship Bridge: Sets and Scenes
Daz Studio By gmon2 on 8/30/2007

Woohoo! I've been searching for a starship bridge set for the longest time and resigned myself to the idea that I would probably have to create such a set myself using some of the sci-fi construction set building blocks I had previously purchased from Daz3D.

However, a nice starship bridge set became available and I couldn't help myself and bought it almost immediately.

Here is a scene created with the starship bridge. After applying the planet and stars backdrop and getting the designed lighting, I can save off this scene for later use.

SYM FACTOR X Comic Book
By gmon2 on 6/9/2007
I just bought my first digital comic book over at the Renderosity website!  It's called SYM FACTOR X and it was created by a group called ImageNation using 3D tools such as Poser.  This is basically what I hope to be able to do.  It was only $6 and came with a bonus 3D model (ImageNation's Exo Armor Propset for Michael 3).  The bonus model itself was worth $34 when it first came out and I remember myself eyeballing it.  I wanted to see what was possible using 3D tools such as Poser and Daz Studio to create comics so this was a no-brainer purchase for me.

Overall I was very impressed with it.  It's a sci-fi story set in the future where the Human Empire has spread out throughout the galaxy and rules over all the other alien races with an iron hand.  I thought it had decent writing and an interesting story with excellent ...

Creating and Saving Characters with Daz Studio
Daz Studio By gmon2 on 6/8/2007

One of the ways I want to work is to be able to create characters and save them off so I could later include them in scenes.

To create a character, you would load in the base model. Below is the base Victoria3 model.  Doesn't look very realistic, does it?

V3Base.png

To change the look of Victoria3, you would apply a "morph pose" to her.  There are many built-in morphs and you can buy additional morph packs for Victoria3.  Below are some eye morph injections for Victoria3.  If I select the head of Victoria3 and double click one of the eye morphs, it places a new parameter on the Parameter Tab for Victoria3's head.

Will Daz Studio allow me to work the way I want to on my project?
Daz Studio By gmon2 on 6/3/2007

I've collected comics for over 20 years.  I would probably still be collecting today except that I don't have the time or space (comics take up a long of space) to read them anymore.  But I still have a great fondness for this form of entertainment.  One of the things I have always wanted to try was to create my own comic book or graphic novel.  When I first heard about Poser and Daz Studio, I thought, “I wonder how hard would it be to use them to produce a comic book or graphic novel?”

As I mentioned earlier, Poser's user interface was a little intimating to me and I never got around to exploring it further (although I hope to do so in the future as I get more experience with Daz Studio and 3D rendering concepts in general).

Here is the way I would like a 3D program to allow me to work on my project:

  1. I want to be able to create characters and save them off.
  2. I ...

Sometimes wearing women's clothes can save you money!
Daz Studio By gmon2 on 5/23/2007

If you browse through the 3D content offered at Daz Productions you will noticed that most items are tailored towards specific models. For example, the Concord Navy clothing item can be used with the Victoria 3 model and the clothing pack set for Michael 1.0 and Victoria 2.0.

I was interested in using the Concord Navy uniforms because I wanted to have a bunch of characters who were some sort of space marines in my comic book project. I also wanted to only use the newer generation 3D models (Victoria 3, Michael ...

Using Daz Studio to create comics and graphic novels
Daz Studio By gmon2 on 5/13/2007

Daz Studio is an amazing 3D application. It's even more amazing because its free!

It's basically a free (but supposedly less powerful) replacement and/or addition for Poser. I first found out about it a couple of years ago after purchasing Poser to try my hand at creating comics with it. I noticed people creating these incredible renderings with a 3D model named “Victoria”. People would purchase Victoria and load her up in Poser to create these fantastic images. So, I decided to take a closer look at the company that created the Victoria model.

It turns out Daz Productions was a company that produces high quality 3D Content. In essence, they create 3D models that are usable in 3D software such ...
